Iron & Wine: He Lays in the Reins

Iron and Wine perform ‘He Lays in the Reins’ on Sound Opinions from WBEZ on Vimeo.

Just a track that I have always liked since the collaboration between Iron & Wine and Calexico some years ago.  This track has just always been a favourite for some reason.  I have a couple versions that have circulated around for a while and thought I would make a stab at it being a favourite for you as well.

“He Lays in the Reins (Home Sessions)” – Iron & Wine
“He Lays in the Reins (live at the Triple Door)” – Iron & Wine with Calexico

Tell me that isn’t a great tune?

  • Great tune. I’ve liked it since I heard that demo (“home sessions”) version.

I didn’t get the chance to hear the “home sessions” version until after the collaboration with Calexico. But that is a great tune either way…sometimes I miss the Mexicali influence of Calexico in the track but I am a sucker for the acoustic versions.

  • I love this song… I have a recording of it from their concert in Omaha this June. Marketa’s voice is so pretty with Sam’s music, I can’t get enough of it!

I pretty much hated the entire Calexico EP, but I love the original versions of the songs, by which I mean the home demos, usually referred to by their dates I think, 9-20-02 and 10-01-01. There’s just a ridiculous amount of pure gold out there by Sam Beam. I don’t like his latest album at all really, but there are a bunch of awesome unreleased old demos and b-sides of his floating around.

@RL – how can you hate the Calexico EP? Tsk, tsk.

I do agree however that the home sessions are fantastic – this one is the ’02 version. Beam really excels in this style of stripped down acoustic.
