Ever have a song that seems like a bizarre scenario, but when you listen it has the power to utterly devastate you? Well Andy Hull (of Right Away, Great Captain! and Manchester Orchestra) feels this way and I agree totally.
The song in question is a part 2 of sorts from The Weakerthans ‘Virtute’ songs – which I believe is confirmed to be John K. Samson’s cat. Andy does both of the songs on his tumblr page and both are downloadable for free – I just thought you needed to hear ‘Virtute the Cat Explains Her Departure’ – please listen in a quiet area or with good headphones. The song originally is not as stark and devastating to listen to but it is Samson’s original lyrics sung by Hull that totally brings this song home for me. Virtute can be anything in your life really and when Hull sings “But I can’t remember the sound that you found for me” it crushes my soul just a little.
