How about a new video performance of a track from the new Pickering Pick album to sway you?  Pickering Pick’s new album “Tiger Balm” is one of the most gorgeous albums you will hear and he is very quickly becoming the master of the lamented ballad.  Something I don’t take lightly.  Sam Pickering Pick was just abroad visiting family and his uber talented sister thought to video a performance of “I Didn’t Know Your Rivers Flowed”.   We will soon be having an extremely limited promotional CD give away for the Tiger Balm album – so if you like what you see/hear below, you will want to swing back very soon.  See the new video below:

Kinda been a hectic last bit with the various world events, personal events and upcoming events.  What is it of which I speak?  Well, glad you asked.

How about those Olympics?  Pretty sweet in my opinion, but I tend to quickly jump on board of sports I would shun in any other forum…I dunno, all of a sudden I am a fiend for biathlon for 2 weeks every 4 years!   I, like a true and proud Canadian, enjoyed the Gold Medal Hockey game this past Sunday and I am even glad it went to overtime for the win.  I hope all you other Canucks had a chance to enjoy a few frosty brews with friends while it happened (I know I did).  Enjoy this bit of Canadian Hockey Classic – Stompin Tom (video & lyrics)!

Just received my tickets for me and the wifey to go see The Tallest Man On Earth when he hits Calgary this May, should be a good show as everyone I know who has seen him live says his shows are excellent.  With his new album The Wild Hunt out in the next couple of months, it should be right on time!  Enjoy “King of Spain” (mp3).

Thinking of hitting the Postdata and Julie Fader show here in Calgary on March 18th.  If you are not totally aware Postdata has a new album which you could say is the perfect blend of Clem Snide and Brian Borcherdt.  This is a very good thing…enjoy “Tobias Grey” (mp3).  Julie Fader is also quite a lovely songstress who’s album “Outside In” was one of the best Canadian Albums last year.  Enjoy “Goodbye Before Hello” (mp3).  You should check out a show if you can (check Hand-Drawn Dracula for dates).

Well class, I wanted to put a quick post on what is happening around Slowcoustic HQ – just looking to keep you all in the loop, we’re a team after all.

Hopefully you all are finding it okay to get to the site lately, my host has been a bit erratic on the up-time in the last couple of weeks, I am looking into it and may be moving hosts to ensure more quality sad bastard music making it through the “big pipe” to your very keen ears.  So basically I apologize if any of you were looking to make it over here to pick up a tune or two and were given a strong left upon trying to negotiate to the site.

Just getting ready to send out the info to my fellow bloggers for the “Best of 2009″ series set to take place in December, hopefully Dec. 7-22 on weekdays only.  If any of you were around last year, what I do is invite fellow music bloggers to do a feature blog post on something that they think was pretty darn neat-o this past year.  The list can be just about anything: best album, best live band, best album cover and best make out album…almost anything!  The side bar to the right of this post (your right, not mine…wait…) you will see a block of images that represent the various sites that are taking place.  So stick around, you may find something that you don’t normally see on this blog and you just might like it!

I have been listening to some pretty good tunes lately and hope to get a lot of features upcoming – recent albums I really like and I think you should check out include Frank Schweikhardt, Heather Woods Broderick (yes that Broderick), The White Buffalo with a recent discovery of JBM via his Daytrotter session.  On repeat around here is that Isbells album and those Borcherdt demos and the amazing new EP from Hezekiah Jones (see Herohill’s post on it).

Also, because I know you all can’t go without a fix (myself included) – how about some lo-fi recordings??  Well this will hit the spot – Andy Berkhout has released a new EP called “Songs on Tape”.  It is aptly named as it was recorded on an actual tape recorder and is a great EP for you lo-fi singer songwriter admirers, which I assume should be a fair share of you readers.  The EP is classic guy with a guitar – its an intimate collection of bedroom folk pop that will have you humming and looking for more.  More you say?  Well he has another EP “In The Light” on his website that is available for a free download.  A free download you say?  Yes, both EPs are available for absolutely nothing – definitely a great option to pick up some solid tunes at rock bottom prices (but don’t forget about his new full length for purchase).

Other than all things slow and acoustic, I just wanted to send a quick site update and ask for some feedback.  I know that the 9 of you (I come from a large family) that visit this site on a regular basis can be of some assistance here.

So, an updated theme!   It isn’t actually an updated theme it is a completely different theme that I had to do some serious work on to make it look the same as my previous theme. So basically I worked hard for you to not notice as much of a change…that sounds about right.   This is where the assistance comes in, I know I have missed things, or there can be a link that isn’t live and all that fine tuning stuff.  I might not know how to “fix” it, but it would be good to know.

Issues I know of (but can’t figure out…I’m a music blogger not a coder and the like):
~ The page numbers at the bottom (main pages, not post pages) have some blue accent (??).  In the test theme that I simply cut and pasted the code they were not this atrocious blue colour. Who knows!!
~ All posts don’t have updated thumbnails. Freakin’ theme defaults to blank or selected image and you have to manually enter the image location for each post…I don’t have time (actually I have lots of time, just not the patience) to cut and past the album cover into the field in every single post from the last year and a half!
~ Some “visit” links are down because when copying, the location remained “dynamic” so instead of a full address it just kept the “/images/imagefile”.  This is usually fine, but for some reason it put two dots first – “../images/imagefile” so the location clearly doesn’t have dots in it so then the image does not display. I have found some, so hopefully there isn’t much more.
~ I am not sure of this one – Internet Explorer displays the font colour INSIDE the posts differently?  I can’t see any difference in Safari and Firefox as it shows it normal…   Who uses IE anymore anyway!  Oh, wait, probably about 60% of the world….

11. Slowcoustic – Slowcoustic reviews Americana/alt-country/folk/indie/down-tempo music. It’s a nice site with a very relaxing layout.
12. The Music Ninja – A bright blog that reviews independent music from the past and present. The site contains lots of music samples
13. Pot Holes In My Blog – Their name is a take on De La Soul’s “Potholes In My Lawn.” This blog expertly reviews a plethora of hip hop music.
14. Everybody Taste – A very unique site that is built on the principle that music is meant to be shared.
15. Hear Ya – A sleek blog that cuts through the clutter of indie music to give you honest and worthwhile reviews.
16. Deckfight – They bill themselves as “indie rock & lit with a southeast bent.” Deckfight has a clean, simple layout that’s inviting and easy to read.
17. Twang Nation – A well written and sagacious blog about country music, alt-country, roots music and Americana.
18. Atlanta Music Guider – You may not live in Atlanta, but they review the same musical acts that are headed to your town. A great resource for music lovers of all kind.
19. Music Zeitgeist – A serious and hardworking blog dedicated to indie music.
20. Quirky NY Chick – Yes this site is quirky and yes it’s written by a chick, but it also has tons of reviews and news. If that wasn’t enough, it’s a great place to visit for news about the live music scene in NYC.

Sorry folks, I missed putting something together for today.  There, there, it’s Friday so it isn’t all bad.

Look over to the right – you can now buy SLOWCOUSTIC shirts!!  I have terrible photos of them but I am working on having stupendously bored attractive people model them…  They are pretty nice and hey, they say you are a purveyor of all things slow and acoustic.  They are nice and subdued and not overly flashy, as that is the way I like it around these parts.  My wife made me order “Ladies” shirts as well as chicks complain about long arms and body in shirts…so we gots both mens and ladies to enjoy.  Hopefully I don’t have to sit on these sons of bitches for years.  The shirts are $20.00 plus $5.00/$8.00 shipping to North America/further than North America (that’s $25.00/$28.00 for those of you who are counting) in good ol’ American dollars.

So just a quick status check on the goings on for yours truly.  I know you are all waiting with baited breath on my daily life.  Come on, don’t you feel like we need a connection?  Whatever, well lets look ahead to what is going on around here.

I am working on a few items and features with:

1. Oweihops‘ new album “Viburnum” will get a review – fantastic album and one of my good online friends, so keep an eye out for it.
2. Working on getting a decent photo of the new Slowcoustic T-shirts (men’s AND ladies thank you very much) that we have for sale for $25 w/shipping in CAN & US – so get you paypal accounts all up to date!  If you see one in New York this weekend, say “hi” to Scott for me.  Holler if you need – we will be having a give away for one, so you could also cheap out and do that as well.
3. My last day as a corporate slag will be next Thursday and then I am off to the private sector doing some web & marketing work. Very excited – screw you suit & tie humps!
4. Still waiting on my iPhone 3GS (I have the 3G regardless) – but Canada has apparently been sold out for the last month…go figure – don’t people get it, shiny things attract attention – must…buy…now…

Just sitting around in the “war room” of the internet media distribution centre here at Slowcoustic and was just doing a status check.  I know what you are thinking – “But Sman, this could take years of 3rd party inspections, focus groups, revenue audits…it’s not worth it!”.  Well friends, let’s do it the old fashion way…you know…crawling out of bed, half dressed and hit the computer in the spare room.  Nice – let’s get started.

• The new logo has been up for a week or so…thoughts?  Too big, too small, just right?  I am also asking as a few people have mentioned that the logo is almost invisible!  How you ask – some browsers are not displaying the lighter strip across the top (the one with clouds and some handwriting) and it is simply all the brown background – which would make a black logo hard to see!  THIS PHOTO is what is should look like.  If it doesn’t look like this to you send me an email to let me know and include your browser type and release – for example Firefox 3.0.1, etc.
• Speaking of logos…I think we are going to make up some stickers and possibly a shirt or two (mostly because I want one), but if you think you would want one – let us know (comments or email).

New Blogroller Alert!!! I have been following some bloggers via twitter and am including a couple more today as they have consistent quality posts, commentary and just are good places to find yourself.  The two included at this point are:

1. Captain’s Dead – Greg finds himself along the indie lines and runs a successful blog with a lot of content and you can rely on solid info.  You can also follow on Twitter – @captainsdead
2. Muzzle of Bees – Ryan is definitely one of the more popular blogs around (not unlike Captains Dead) and for good reason – quality, great info and good taste.  Follow on Twitter – @muzzleofbees

Okay you probably already follow both these blogs, but there are soo many good blogs out there, that honestly my blogroll could get away from me!  I have also picked the above as they are very entertaining via twitter.  Social media works then, doesn’t it class?

Well I will leave you today with a couple of Canadian acts that are included in a project I posted on for You Crazy Dreamers.  The project is “Saved By Saskatoon” and is chock full of great music and surprisingly enough a gratis download as needed.  The two tracks included are a orchestral gothic journey entitled “We Will Be Born Again” from These Hands as well as the gorgeous prairie ballad “My Ghost, Your Ghost” from Pearson.  Enjoy.

So here we are on December 25th and I have slipped away to get online (sparse during this time of the year as sitting next to the glow of the world wide web is not considered festive….pardon me??).  So basically just a quick post to say thanks to all those readers and vistors of the blog and fellow friends and family.  Slowcoustic thanks all of ya!

Well Christmas (or Xmas as I know it…long story) was good, my mother flew in to visit and so it is nice to see family this time of year.  Of course endless courses of food and flowing wine helps!!  Well as I type this on my new keyboard (thanks Santa or “wifey” as I know her), I am getting ready to watch western movies and drink sparkling shiraz!   Note: The key to still look masculine while drinking sparkling shiraz is to ensure your pinky finger stays down while drinking, tape it down if needed boys!

Lots more in the new year to come, (2009 is shaping up nicely), and more regular posts are on their way.  So while you wait look at some of the archives as there are 100′s of mp3 on various pages, and be sure to zip over to my blogroll, they are great folks with great tunes.

In more ways than one this post is not “new”.  I have decided not to do my weekly post “New on the ‘nets” this Saturday as I am working on a “10 things that WON’T be on my Best of 2008 list” post in it’s place and this band is not my discovery in any way.  In saying that, I was going to mention in my short insight to happenings on various blogs this week about the band Theodore that my good friend over at das klienicum had posted on.  If you are up on your German, you can check the post here.  I can’t recommend visiting das klienicum enough, there is constantly great selections, including this one – I will always find something completely new to me that is a must have!  Also, don’t miss out in the upcoming couple of weeks – das klienicum (among others) will be gracing the very pages of Slowcoustic with a “Best of 2008″ list to share – so there, you got your warning.

…and back to the band, I have to honestly say I hadn’t heard of Theodore previously and I am quite taken with them at this point.  They have that hazy, slide guitar country ballad feel.  This stuff is always a killer for me as I just can’t resist it.  It makes me want to have heartache just to just stumble over and crawl inside the atmosphere it emanates.  I definitely plan on listening some more and picking up an album (and the new one when it is finished in the new year).  They are now on Undertow Music which already has a stellar line up including many all time favourites so this must be a good thing.

So I must apologize for yesterday, my webhost was having a bit of a issue with keeping me and many others “online”.  What’s the big deal, who needs to be online…..er, ah, freakin’ everyone!  Okay, let’s get on with some “new on the ‘nets” shall we.  The below snippets have been pulled kickin’ and screamin’ from the very womb that is the WWW.

• das klienicum, always a venue for numerous discoveries of the musical persuasion, has a boat load of stuff including a write up on an Alela Diane concert and some Skygreen Leopards.  This is for everyone, of course if you speak German it may make a bit more sense…
• We all like cover tunes – the good folks from my blogroll have you covered (you see what I did there?) over on Captain Obvious and It All Started With Carbon Monoxide.  Pick up some music and play the game with loved ones – “Hey, guess what song this is?  AND who sings it??”
• Apparently there is going to be a shift in the Space Time Continuum due to a recent electing of a charismatic leader for the “free world”.  Yes, we can…listen to a soundtrack as well.
• For something completely different for the blog (and to let you know I have extensive musical interestes beyond an acoustic guitar) – The Hood Internet has the 3rd istallment of their Mixtape and if ya wanna get your groove on and still be cooler than the rest of your friends, check it out here.  Not really from last week, but I just found it last week!
• I meant to link to this last week, but apparently did not.  Gorilla Vs. Bear is a great blog, we are not always on the same page, but they do a great job and have a lot to read through.  This post on Beach House had the tag line of “Beach House Covers TLC“, but it is actually a fantastic live acoustic version of “Used To Be” with some waterfalls at the end – both awesome and funn-e.

That is all for now, I will leave you with an update on Great Northern – a band I am not completely familiar with, but with the track below, I am going to start to listen.  There is a new studio album in the works that is looking to creep into the light by April of next year.  There is an all encompassing feeling when listening to “Low is a Height” and it is both comforting and powerful at the same time.  You can check out their first release “Trading Twilight for Daylight” over on Eenie Meenie Records.

Well some may know, but for the most part most will not.  The Slowcoustic new site turned “1 month” this last week!!  I know, I know, maybe a bit early for parties and movie deals yet, but congrats to us anyway!  I have to say that the last month we did quite well for a fledgling blog (with a help from a few friends – thank you!) despite only minor hiccups.  I mean I don’t think a blog of this music genre is going to crazy popular as readers of Slowcoustic would tend to be a bit more, how do I say, a connoisseur of the slow tempo.  We ain’t gonna hit top of the charts people, but that is the way we like it!

With that being said, what was going on around the WWW other than our 1 month anniversary you ask?  Well I have a few items of note below;

• You might want to swing by the “So the Wind Won’t Blow it All Away” for some nice tunes – especially recently with Boduf Songs.  I kept meaning to post on Mat Sweet (Mr. Boduf Songs himself) but didn’t hear back from him or his people – ;-(
• The good folks over at Untitled Records Blog have a little write up on Slowcoustic Fav Damien Jurado (is this another Jurado “round the ‘nets” post….DAMN rights).
• Not really this last week, but I found it this last week (does that count?) – but Peer Validated from good ol’ Wisconsin has a track “Hazelton” from Justin Vernon (“post” DeYarmond and “Pre” Bon Iver) – this guy cannot do wrong!
• So the next attempt to bring mainstream indie into mainstream was released – Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist – the movie opened.  Clell Tickle would be proud.  One pleasant surprise was Mr. Paul Tiernan and Mr. Richard Hawley making the soundtrack.  Do you think Band of Horses and Vampire Weekend got into a fight to make sure their song was in the opening credits??  HA, just jokes people!

• Hearing about Bon Iver’s reworking of 4 tracks from his album for MySpace Transmissions.  Yes, the album is getting a bit long in the tooth for the die hards, but still makes me happy as I try to emulate Justin’s singing voice…
• Finding out William Fitzsimmons is having a new album from our good friends at You Crazy Dreamers…I didn’t know…bad music guru wanna-be!  Check it out here.
• Captain Obvious has a great “covers mix“, has thoughts on the new Horse Feathers album and discovers great things in general – (thanks Cap!).
• Receiving my copy of Chad VanGaalen’s “Soft Airplane” and listening to the CDR copies for “In The Molecules”, “Bones of Man” and one other track…someone tell me what it is called (it isn’t the vinyl extras, the cd release extras)!!  I am posting it until someone tells me in the comments of this post (Sorry Flemish Eye records – I am not labelling (well obviously) it so it shouldn’t be that “searchable/download ready”)

I am sure there are other things that are new (like realizing Chicago and area has crazy talent for musicians!) but I can’t think as I am only on my first 12 oz. coffee…  Give us a shout on what is new with all you.
